[ARCHIVED] Water Safety Isn't Just for Summer

Even though there's a chill in the air and summer is months away, water safety is still something to think about.  More than 50% of infant drowning occurs in a bathtub.  How much time does it take to drown?  In the time it takes to cross a room for a towel - 10 seconds - a child in a bathtub can be submerged; to answer a phone - two minutes - a child can lose consciousness; to sign for a package at the door - four to six minutes - a child submerged in a tub or pool can sustain permanent brain damage. Children can drown quickly and quietly and seldom call for help.  Follow these Bath Time and Home Safety tips:  1.  Always remain within arm’s reach of the child.   2.  Bath seats are not a substitute for supervision. 3. Never leave your child alone near a bathtub, toilet, bucket or any standing water in which a child's nose or mouth may be submerged.
